Cigarette Litter Prevention on the Tennessee River

Marina+3.jpg

Targeting the most littered item in the world…

- Cigarettes easily wash into waterways and can introduce enough toxins to kill aquatic life within 2 gallons of surrounding water.

- Their filters are made of plastic microfibers that never break down organically, instead polluting our waterways.

- Cigarettes make up more than 1/3 of litter collected around the world—38% to be exact!

Making a difference

Keep the Tennessee River Beautiful is collaborating with community partners to not only reduce cigarette litter already on the ground or in the water, but to make a cultural shift away from cigarette litter as an accepted norm.

clean marinas

Working with the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) to support their Tennessee Valley Clean Marina program, KTNRB was able to enlist 24 marinas to install and maintain free, art-wrapped litter stands to prevent cigarettes from being thrown down near the water. To date, 150 have been installed.

Cigarette litter prevention program (CLPP)

Keep America Beautiful (KAB) has awarded KTNRB with a $5,000 CLPP grant to install cigarette litter prevention within the 7-state Tennessee River watershed. This grant will fund a second phase of 200 cigarette receptacles at participating marinas, campgrounds, and other public waterfront spaces. KAB also donated all of the cigarette receptacles, valued over $100 each.

Educating for change

Wanting to do more than simply remove cigarettes already littered, KTNRB sought to print eye-catching, educational art wraps to apply to the cigarette receptacles so that users could understand the environmental consequences to littering cigarettes. TVA and the Tennessee Department of Transportation (TDOT) Special Litter Grant funded the art wraps.

delivering the goods

Keep Tennessee Beautiful (KTNB) covered the shipment costs for delivering the metal boxes to marinas across Tennessee. KTNB is also partnering on a third effort toward reducing cigarette litter along the Tennessee River. KTNRB and KTNB will soon open orders for larger, stand-alone, metal cigarette receptacles that will also include educational art wraps. Stand by for more details coming soon!
